For who shall declare his generation ...

For this world: nothing.  "For who shall
Declare his generation?" That genealogy
From Abraham, or from David, apparently
Cut off.

Yet, what a generation! "A seed shall
Serve him; it shall be accounted to
The Lord for a generation"; "And the seed
Of his servants shall inherit" Zion;
"Their seed shall be established before thee".

Psalm 22: 30
Psalm 69: 36
Psalm 102: 28

He was taken ... from judgment

"He was taken ... from judgment",
From any semblance of man's justice,
From false witnesses, and a false judge:
And, sent by them to the cross,
He bore God's judgment for us
So that we might be brought to God.

He was taken from oppression ...

"He was taken", by men,
With such a motive,
"From oppression",
That being the bent
Of fallen man.  "He was
Taken" by the love of God
"From oppression" to the Father's throne;
That being the bent of God's mind.

He was oppressed ...

The empire, imperious;
The priests, unpriestly;
The justice, unjust;
His friend, betraying Him;
His lover; denying Him,
He was oppressed, and ...

His captors, beating Him;
The soldiers, scourging Him;
The thief, insulting Him ...
He was afflicted, but
He opened not his mouth.

All we like sheep have gone astray ...

All we,
Not only the black, or ringstraked, or spotted,
Like sheep,
In stubbornness and stupidity,
Have gone astray,
In the howling wilderness,
We have turned,
From the voice behind us,
Every one,
Not only the blind, and the lame and sick,
To his own way,
From the Shepherd in front of us,
And Jehovah hath laid upon Him,
The smitten Shepherd,
The iniquity of us all.

And with his stripes we are healed

Ailments He could heal by power -
Sight to the blind;
Strength to the lame;
Cleansing to the leper;
Hearing to the deaf
- Yet He bore all in His spirit.

But where sin had acted -
Blindness to the light;
Crookedness in walking;
Defilement in sin's nature;
Deafness to God's word
- With his stripes we are healed.

The chastisement of our peace ...

Blessed is our peace: peace
With God; peace in the heart;
The peace of God, the God
Of peace.

Peace has been made; God
Has made peace; made peace
"By the blood of his cross":
Christ's cross.

"He is our peace": tempering
The disparate into one man
In Himself; reconciling us
By the cross.

What chastisement! Our peace
Exists and subsists through chastisement:
The chastisement of our peace was
Upon Him.

He was wounded for our transgressions ...

Yet grace has taught us: He was
Wounded for our transgressions; He was
Bruised for our iniquities; that depth
Was endured on our behalf; that love
Bore our sins in His body on the cross.
Our Saviour bore the stroke that justice struck.

And we, we did regard him ...

And we
- Seeing that solitary figure -
Betrayed,
Denied,
Arraigned,
Beaten,
Scourged,
Mocked,
Thorn-crowned,
Nailed,
Crucified,
Disdained,
We did regard Him,
Stricken,
Smitten of God and afflicted.

Sunday 7 June 2020

Surely he hath borne our griefs ...

Looking up to heaven,
He groaned, and said to him,
Ephphatha.

Having laid hold of the hand of the child
He says to her,
Talitha koumi.

They say to him, Lord,
Come and see.
Jesus wept.

And as he drew near
Seeing the city
He wept over it.

Surely he hath borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows.

And we esteemed him not

We esteemed him not;
We did not appreciate his worth;
We didn't value him;
We didn't think about him;
We thought nothing of him;
We didn't even notice him;
We ignored him as if he is were nothing;
We didn't care;
We held him of no account;
We despised him and said, "He is nobody!".

And like one ...

We did not want to look
On such a One: He was
An embarrassment; He nettled
Our consciences; He shone on
Place we wished unlit in
Our chambers; He was too close
For comfort; and the reproach
Broke His heart: He was "like one
From whom men hide their faces".
